The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the scientific body of the Federal Republic of Germany that prepares expert reports and opinions on issues related to food safety and consumer health protection. The BfR provides sound scientific advice to federal ministries and agencies responsible for consumer protection and food safety (e.g. Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, BMEL) or responsible for chemical safety (e.g. Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, BMUB). The institute also conducts scientific research, primarily to strengthen and to substantiate risk assessment processes. Given the huge impact of nanotechnology in the last decade BfR was strongly involved and participated to several large National and European Projects on NanoSafety such as for instance BMBF nanoGEM, BMBF NanoGRAVUR, EU QualityNano, EU NanoReg2 and ERANET NanoToxClass.
